Lumbar Sympathectomy For Hyperhidrosis

A sympathetctomy is usually considered to be the last resort treatment for anyone with excessive sweating. If you’ve come to this page to find out more about them then read ahead.

The Procedure

This operation is always done under general anesthesia. 3 small cuts are made and the nerve is clamped or, more usually, severed.

It takes about an hour to perform and usually the patient can be released in a day. In this sense, it is less invasive than ETS.

Who Is A Candidate?

This type of surgery is only useful for those with sweating from the feet and lower regions of the body.

What Are The Risks?

There are always risks with any operation using general anesthesia.

In addition, many people will experience compensatory sweating. This is when the body feels it needs to release sweat elsewhere to replace that which would otherwise have been lost through the feet. Normally it emerges through the chest or the back.

In this sense, you can see that a lumbar sympathectomy does not actually cure excessive sweating or reduce it, it merely diverts it.

Alternatives

Surgery should always be the last resort. If you’re considering it, have you really given yourself a chance and tried absolutely EVERYTHING else out there?

I would personally advise a natural and holistic approach. I strongly suggest you at least take a look before going for risky surgery. You can read my critical review of the top 3 natural excessive sweating by clicking here: Top 3 Natural Sweat Cures.

Butt Sweat – How To Prevent It

Butt sweat is one of the more embarrassing forms of hyperhidrosis. Often it shows through the clothes and is difficult to hide.

What Is Butt Sweat?

Butt sweat is actually a form of excessive sweating called truncal hyperhidrosis.

It is usually seen when sitting down. You may notice it happening and start to feel the moistness. Standing up is the biggest fear of sufferers and often, the fear of standing up will actually make you sweat even more. This is because it is easily visible, not just in terms of a wet patch, but also because the clothes tend to sit between the cleft in the backside.

The other thing about this condition is that, unlike other forms of hyperhidrosis, there is not always visible dripping sweat from the buttocks. What actually happens is that condensation is actually occuring on the surface that you are sitting on.

Be honest with yourself – are you overweight? Many people with “butt sweat” are overweight and the large nature of their buttocks means that the groinal area is less ventilated compared to others. Hence the greater propensity for condensation and less chance for moisture to evaporate, due to the build-up of heat.

Breathable Clothing

Also, make sure that you are only wearing breathable underwear and clothes such as 100% cotton. Avoid any synthetics, they will only increase any sweat production.

Natural Approach Is Best

Many of the traditional methods of treating hyperhidrosis, such as medical grade antiperspirants, iontophoresis, Botox etc., cannot be used for this type of excessive sweating due to risk of irritation or pain.

The best approach is the natural, holistic one. As a first suggestion, I would advise you to try the “raw food diet”. This is a diet that most closely approximates what human beings are supposed to eat and there are cases of hyperhidrosis sweaters who have been cured with this diet. You can find out more about it here: Raw Food Diet.

The other thing that you could try is one of the many holistic sweat reduction programs. They claim to eliminate your sweat within 2 weeks. You can find out more about those here: Top 3 Sweat Cures Revealed.

Treatment For Sweaty Hands

There is no single treatment for sweaty hands, there are many to choose from depending on your own situation.

Medical Grade Antiperspirant

This is the easiest place to start. If you see your doctor then he can prescribe you an extra strong roll-on which you may only need to apply once per week.

It is not like anything you can get in the stores and much stronger due to a higher concentration of aluminium chloride which blocks the sweat ducts.

Apply it last thing at night and dry it off with a hair dryer or fan for best results. Then wash it off first thing in the morning.

The Best Hyperhidrosis Treatments

A few people complain of a slight burning or itching sensation.

Iontophoresis

This is a very popular treatment for sweaty hands. It involves submerging your hands, palms facing down, into a shallow tray filled with tap water.

2 electrodes are also submerged into the water and a very low electric current is passed.

No one really understands this fully but the electrolysis treatment seems to block the ducts for about 2 weeks after a typical 20 minute session. You can also get a better result if you replace the tap water with a glycopyrrolate solution.

If you find that you like this treatment and your body responds well then you may even consider purchasing your own machine – one popular model is the Fischer MD-1a.

Botox

Botox is actually a brand name for what is really botulinum toxin. In large doses it can kill a man but in extremely small doses it has many medical applications and not just cosmetic ones.

It is best used on the underarms but it can also be used for the hands. Make sure you find yourself a skilled and experienced doctor if you decide to go this route because too much Botox can actually interfere with your basic hand motor coordination for many months which could be disastrous.

The results are excellent and you can completely stop sweating for around six months. However, the only problem is with the cost and due to the sheer number of shots required you are looking at somewhere around $3,000 to $5,000 for the treatment.

Surgery

Surgery should only be considered an absolute last resort and I do not recommend it.

One type is liposuction-curettage. I have never heard of it being used for the hands but you can read more about it here: Liposuction – Curettage.

The other is ETS surgery. I highly recommend against this type of surgery, however if you want to know more about it then I have written about it on this site here: Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS).

Natural Treatments

Finally, there are many treatments which you will never hear the medical establishment talk about. This is because the world of medicine is focussed on treating symptoms and the money associated with it. You never hear about the medical industry investing billions of dollars into preventative healthcare and natural cures do you?
